May 6, next Tuesday, Cedar Key voters will choose two members of the City Commission and elect either an incumbent or challenger to the Water and Sewer District Board. The fact that six candidates have filed for just three seats suggests multiple points-of-view on various issues. From the dispassionate observations of Cedar Key News, the issues appear to be:
1. How the Community Redevelopment Agency spends $9.2 million.
2. How the Cedar Key Police Department does its job.
3. How the City and the Water and Sewer District work together to provide service to all residences and businesses. Four of six candidates took advantage of a Cedar Key News questionnaire that addresses these issues. Their answers were published in the April 17 print edition and online at Cedar Key News.com. Furthermore, on April 26 four of the candidates engaged in give and take at a Candidates' Forum sponsored by Cedar Key News. The current campaigns for office in Cedar Key are in stark contrast to the 2008 presidential primary campaigns. The Cedar Key races have been mercifully short, and to date, sweet. Not one nickel has been spent on T-V ads or even yard signs. How laid-back can we get? Yet voter turnout is traditionally good.
