With Police Chief Virgil Sandlin participating, the Cedar Key Commission settled key items in the 2008-2009 Police Department budget at its first budget workshop, August 20. Agreed upon were a small reduction in full time officers and discontinuing the use of the K-9 patrol.

Dockside Motel Has New Owners

Rod and Leah Luckin at the entrance of their Dockside Motel.

July and August have been busy times for Rod and Leah Luckin, the new owners of the Dockside Motel. Looking out on Cedar Key's new fishing pier, the Dockside Motel provides twelve units for visitors. The rooms have views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Cedar Key Inside Marina. Furthermore, the Luckins have given a facelift to each room in the past two months.

Dolphin Expert Visits Cedar Key

Saturday August 22 Dr. Richard Connor of the University of Massachusets Dartmouth delivered an illustrated and highly animated lecture at the Cedar Key Library. Dr. Connor has studied dolphin behavior for twenty-six years, mostly in Shark Bay on the west coast of Australia. He showed photographs of social and feeding behavior, with video of feeding behavior that has brought special attention to the dolphins of Cedar Key.

Now Dr. Connor has a graduate student, Stefanie Gazda who is in Cedar Key to extend scientific knowledge of cooperation and specialization of dolphin feeding behavior. The first video of dolphins circling and devouring fish was recorded by Frank Cox of Williston, FL about eigthteen years ago. Cox`s video came to Connor`s attention and generated the current study by gradstudent Stefanie Gazda.

Police Chief Applicants Winnowed to Six

The Cedar Key Commissioners, after reviewing twenty-nine applications for the job of Police Chief, met August 21 to select individuals for personal interviews. With the guidance of Ruth Hernandez, a human resources professional, the Commissioners selected six applicants for interviews, and a seventh held in reserve. The meeting lasted about one hour. Five citizens attended the selection meeting.

Lang Named Interim CRA Director

Interim CRA Director Lang, One Year Contract

The Cedar Key Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) voted to make former Local Planning Agency Chair Greg Lang Interim CRA Director for the next 12 months. The terms of Lang's contract, which was negotiated in the past week, are extensive. In summary, Lang will work full time, with an "at will" condition that he or the CRA Board can terminate the contract with 30 days' notice. No health benefits or cal allowance are in the contract, but expenses will be reimbursed.

Davis to Continue Administration of City

Cedar Key's administrative structure, the format given a three-month trial in May, has been given an extension. The format makes the Mayor also the administrator over all city departments. As described at the beginning, the Community Redevelopment Agency is structurally under the Commission as a whole.
