Cedar Key Pier Officially Open

Levy County Commissioners Nancy Bell, Lillie Rooks and Danny Stevens (l. to r.) cutting the bibbon to officially open the fishing pier.

The ribbon was cut, thereby opening the new fishing pier in Cedar Key. Incumbent and prospective Levy County office holders were abundant. The pier was blessed by one local minister and another blessed the fishing fleet, including clammers. The crowd that attended the ceremonies adjourned to Dock Street where local restaurateurs sold samples of their special dishes. All of these events fell on a fair Saturday morning, October 4.

Levy County Commissioners Lillie Rooks, Nancy Bell and Danny Stevens officially opened the pier by cutting a red ribbon. Some observers might have likened the ribbon to the red tape that had to be cut to get Federal Emergency Management Agency funding to replace the wooden dock that was irreparably damaged by hurricanes in 2004. The footprint of the old dock was filled by the news pier. Furthermore, much needed public restrooms were replaced as well. The daily use of the pier by fishermen since the unofficial completion of construction in July demonstrates the need for a fishing site.
