Chamber of Commerce-City Visitor`s Center Project

Jim Hoy

Cedar Key Commissioners approved a Chamber of Commerce proposal to renovate a City property for use as a visitor`s center at its June 16 meeting. The property, the Creswell house adjacent to the City Library, will have two rooms, a bathroom and the porch made usable by in-kind labor by the Chamber of Commerce in lieu of rent for five years. Community Redevelopment funds ($2000) will be provided by the City for materials. Utility and insurance costs will be paid by the Chamber.

The visitor`s center will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM, and from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM on weekends, a major expansion of hours over those at the current office at Second and D Street.

After a brief discussion during which the Commission set the period of occupancy at five rather than seven years, the proposal was accepted on a unanimous vote on Commissioner Heath Davis` motion. Chamber President Paul Rimavicus thanked the Commission for its support and promised that all Cedar
Key businesses would benefit from the project.
