The Cedar Key Community Center will soon be using solar energy to reduce electric utility costs. On a unanimous vote, the City Commission selected Delta Coast Energy Solutions as the contractor to install a 5000 Watt photovoltaic system on the roof of the Community Center. A request for bids brought two responses for a 10,000 Watt system and one bid for a 5000 Watt system, that being from Delta Coast Energy Solutions. The photovoltaic system will cost $42,500. However, the State Of Florida will pay $20,000 of the cost through an energy conservation initiative by the state. Dale Register, co-owner of Delta Coast told Cedar Key News that it expects to complete the project in July. Coincidentally, Commissioner Gene Hodges, during discussion of the project, mentioned that a photovoltaic system had been activated at his off-island hunting camp earlier in the day, making it the fourth system in the vicinity. Rather than a ribbon-cutting, a switch-throwing ceremony to put the Community Center system online with Central Florida Electric Coop will no doubt be a City Commission event soon. |
