Informational Meeting on Oil Spill for the Clam Farming Industry

On Tuesday, July 27, there will be an informational meeting for the clam farming industry on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Representatives from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will be available to address several topics. David Heil, Assistant Director of the Division of Aquaculture, will review the agency`s planning and emergency regulatory responses should oil from Louisiana reach Florida`s shellfish harvesting areas. A Division of Marketing representative will introduce a "Florida Gulf Safe" marketing campaign developed to ensure buyers and the public that Florida seafood products are safe and available. The latest reports from the clearinghouse of information will also be provided, as well as how to access this information. The meeting is from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Senator George Kirkpatrick Marine Lab in Cedar Key. For further information, contact Leslie Sturmer, UF Shellfish Extension Program at 352-543-5057 or LNST@ufl.edu.

Prior to this meeting, a general membership meeting will be held by the Cedar Key Aquaculture Association from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the same facility. At this time, annual association and Anchor Hole memberships can be renewed, and ballots cast for 2010-11 board of directors. In addition, a review of accomplishments from the past year and updates on new projects, such as Anchor Hole boat ramp improvements, will be provided. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served. For further information, contact Rose Cantwell, association chair, at 352-543-6346 or cantwellrr@bellsouth.net.
