FLORIDA’S NATURE COAST CONSERVANCY PLACES ITS FIRST SIGN

June 24, 2019

JUNE 24 FNCC 1st Sign locationFlorida’s Nature Coast Conservancy is the Cedar Key-based land trust dedicated to the acquisition of land for preservation, conservation, and/or public recreation. The organization lobbies, educates, encourages, and assists local governments and other land trusts in the acquisition and preservation of environmentally endangered lands suitable for recreation, preservation, or conservation.

Among FNCC’s major accomplishments is the role it played in the fate of Atsena Otie. Located off the coast of the City of Cedar Key, Atsena Otie was a proposed housing development in early 1990s. The FNCC encouraged and lobbied for the public acquisition of the island. FNCC was successful. Now Atsena Otie is an historical site.

Another proud accomplishment of FNCC is its care of the Trestle Trail, located just off State Road 24 on Grove Street in Cedar Key. The trail follows the train track that delivered the first train to Cedar Key in 1861. The path traverses lush earth under towering pines, fragrant cedars, oaks, and a host of multi-colored wildflowers.

Pictured here are three proud FNCC board members placing FNCC’s first, newly designed, modest sign designating the land trust’s presence. From left to right are FNCC President Rick Anthony, Vice-President Jim Wortham, and Katherine Dunlop.

Nine more signs, designed by FNCC Treasurer Sam Gibbs and Katherine Dunlop, are due for placement soon.

FNCC invites you to visit its website at http://www.floridasnaturecoastconservancy.org/.

We believe you will enjoy the myriad efforts FNCC has made to keep Cedar Key and its surrounding area quiet, green, and accessible to the public.
