Free Hi-Speed Internet Test under Way.... Local Citizens Invited to Participate
August 27, 2020
A cooperative public/private sector effort led by the Cedar Key Water and Sewer District has delivered hi speed wireless internet to Cedar Key.
The internet provider, WiFiber of Chiefland, recently installed antennas on the City water tower. These antennas capture a wireless internet signal from WiFiber headquarters in Chiefland and redistribute it across the Cedar Key. From Fenimore to Number Four, out to Jernigan, over to Rye Key and back, WiFiber is investing in equipment and technology designed to offer superior internet service to all business and residential customers in Cedar Key.
This is not “fiber optic” or “u-verse” or “satellite” internet. It is conventional hi-speed broadband internet delivered to homes and businesses wirelessly. It is service that is identical to the internet enjoyed by customers on the mainland. The equipment is compact (smaller than your TV dish). The wireless signal is similar to FM radio signals. Residential and business service rates from WiFiber are comparable to Ma Bell. Speed and reliability are superior.
CKWSD General Manager John McPherson and the Water and Sewer District Board have allowed WiFiber to offer citizens a test of this service. If the test proves successful, Cedar Key will be one step closer to enjoying affordable, reliable hi-speed internet. Public access is now available at the Cedar Key Library. Bring your wireless devices - phones, tablets or laptops to log on - or - use the library’s public access computers. Check your email, surf the web, browse Amazon - it’s all available to you – free of charge during the limited time test period.
Help shape the future of Cedar Key. Go to the library. Evaluate this new internet service. Tell us how WiFiber Hi Speed Wireless Broadband compares to your present internet connection here in Cedar Key. Your feedback will help connect the entire community.
