PERSON TESTING POSITIVE WITH COVID-19 ATTENDED
SEPTEMBER 9 BUDGET MEETING WITH FULL HOUSE

THE SITUATION
A person recently testing positive with covid-19 attended the September 9, 2020, budget meeting. The meeting, open to the public, had approximately thirty-five individuals in attendance.

EDITORIAL PURRPOSE
Brought to the attention of the Cedar Key News on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, just yesterday, Cedar Key News staff feels it is incumbent upon them to:
   • tell all those attendance at the 9/9/20 budget workshop that they have possibly been exposed to covid-19;
   • encourage the City of Cedar Key to create or, if already in place, to actualize policies and practices that keep citizens and city staff safe; and
   • encourage the City of Cedar Key to make public in a timely manner their decisions, policies, and practices on matters such as this, so critical to the general welfare.

CURRENT PRACTICE IN CITY HALL
  • Currently no city staff member, all of whom attend meetings and interact with the public daily wear a mask, despite the Centers for Disease Control guidelines.
  • City staff has not been complying with the precautions, set down by the city commission, when dealing with the public.
  • Commissioners either wear masks or have the masks ready in their hands, and sometimes remove them when speaking to an audience.

SUGGESTIONS
  • City staff working in proximity with the infected person should be tested and quarantine themselves immediately as per the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control.
  • City Commissioners should communicate to their public about what procedures have been put in place to alleviate this situation and others that may well surface soon.

CORRECTION
CKN initially published this piece citing the meeting date in error.
The correct meeeting date is September 9 not September 1.
