CK CITY DECALCITY HEARING INFORMS PUBLIC OF GRANT TO REFURBISH CITY PARK EQUIPMENT
October 12, 2020

At the September 28, 2020, City of Cedar Key Final Budget Hearing, commissioners unanimously approved Resolution 443 allowing staff to proceed with a Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program, FRDAP, grant application for a $50,000 grant to make major repairs to the equipment in City Park.

On Friday, October 9, Vice-Mayor Sue Colson held a public meeting / hearing to explain the grant’s specifics at City Hall at 9 am. Audience members and Colson wore masks; city staff did not wear a mask. All were physically distanced. The brief meeting adjourned at 9:15 am.

BACKGROUND
Colson provided the necessary background information. The current playground equipment was acquired in 2003, seventeen years ago, at a cost of “$74,000 to $76,000” with an expected 12 to 14-year life span because of its use and salt-air environment.

The equipment is inspected monthly by Cedar Key Public Works personnel to assure safety. Joe Miller of Miller Recreation Equipment and Design, Inc., in Bradenton, Florida, initially sold the equipment to the city. He has recently inspected the structure.

GRANT SPECIFICS
The FRDAP grant application must be submitted now; awards are notified in the spring; spending can begin in summer. The grant will be logged into the city’s Capital Improvement Plan. Grant Administrator Fred Foxx reports, said Colson, that all FRDAP $50,000 grants applied for were granted last year.

REPAIR / MAINTENANCE
The grant will cover expenses for repair and maintenance of the main multipurpose structure at City Pak. The “central “tower,” reported Colson, is tight. The decks emanating from the tower are showing wear and need refurbishing for safety. The fibar, the required material at the base of all the playground equipment, needs replacement.

In addition, if funds allow, shuffleboard, hopscotch, and Four-Square lines will be painted on the basketball court, allowing four games to be played in that space.

MONITORING
Colson announced a recreational board to help monitor progress of the grant: Cedar Key School Migrant Education Program Advocate/Tutor / PTO President Lisa Custer, Cedar Key School Dean Jeff Webb, and City Clerk Crystal Sharp.
