LIVING SHORELINE RESTORATION UPDATE
by Nature Coast Biological Station Director Mike Allen
November 23, 2020
We have several big updates to share here before the Thanksgiving holiday. Savanna Barry and Mark Clark recently completed the living shoreline project on Airport Road in Cedar Key. Thanks to their hard work and the work of a lot of volunteers, they completed the sand placement and vegetation planting, with over 6,000 plants planted in that area. Our boat captain Kenny McCain drove the front-end loader to spread the sand, and they completed the job on time. We were fortunate that Tropical Storm Eta did not cause damage to this fledgling exposed shoreline, and now hopefully the sites will have the winter and spring for vegetation to become established and stabilize the shoreline. Congrats to Savanna and Mark, and thank you to all the local homeowners and volunteers who made this project a reality.
