WHAT HAPPENED WITH C STREET BRIDGE?

January 15, 2021

Florida Department of Transportation Communications Specialist Troy Roberts responded to the Cedar Key News staff this week when questioned about the recent pause in construction of the C Street Bridge.  Roberts, who represents FDOT’s District Two, Northeast Florida, abbreviated the hiatus with the following information.

“On Monday, January 4, a small sinkhole opened up at the north side of the C Street Bridge project that impacted construction operations. FDOT recently became aware of a void near the construction site, with plans to address it once the foundation and retaining wall work was complete, believing it would not be an impact to the work underway.

This unexpected development required work on the project to stop and the temporary bridge to be closed. Crews immediately filled the hole with a flowable concrete, and the temporary bridge was reopened two days later, Wednesday, January 6.

While the sinkhole itself has been filled as a temporary measure, crews will work in the coming weeks to fill the underlying void in a permanent way that will help stabilize the area for ongoing construction and for the future integrity of the roadway leading to the bridge.

Crews will continue working on the south side of the C Street Bridge project and push toward completion while these repairs are made. It is still expected the project will be completed this summer; however, it will be several weeks before we can estimate any impact to project completion as a result of this unexpected occurrence.”
