2021 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The Friends of the WGP depend on the support of our community! Your past support has helped open the Education Center, fund programs for community and local school outreach and education, and maintain the WGP.  Thank you!

YEAR IN REVIEW

As one would expect 2020 was not a typical year for WGP programs and events. The Friends were able to host a number of events early in the year. However all other talks and events (e.g., Yankeetown 5th graders visit) had to be suspended in March due to the Pandemic.

On the positive side, many visitors are coming to the WGP to walk, picnic, bird, and fish. Facebook, Google Reviews, and the Education Center guestbook entries and posts include comments like “Beautiful”, “Birding today at the WGP. 32 species!”, “Thank you for preserving nature”, and  “This place is a hidden gem!”.

In other news, the Friends have taken over the Preserve lawn and trail mowing. This will save Yankeetown thousands of dollars per year. The Friends were able to contribute over $10,000 to the WGP Endowment Fund in 2020. And, on a final positive note, Yankeetown will be leasing a portion of the Education Center to a group of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) researchers. This agreement will further reduce the impact of the Preserve's operational costs on the Town.
