FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY PRESENT THE IMPORTANCE OF COASTAL MANGROVES

Whitney will outline the importance of mangroves and salt marshes and discuss the ecosystem services they provide. She will give an historical account of mangrove presence along the Florida coastline dating from the 1700s to the present.

She will discuss her research in the north central Gulf of Mexico, in which she examined the impacts of the northward range expansion of black mangrove into salt marshes and the impacts it may have had on associated fauna. She will touch on the future of mangrove presence on the coast and other issues related to trimming, care, etc.
