It is with sadness that the family of Gene Benedict announces his passing.

Eugene Verne Benedict, Jr. (Gene, “Trouble”), 78, of Cedar Key, Florida, passed away on Friday September 6, 2019.

Gene was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 19, 1941. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in chemical engineering. He attended the U.S. Air Force Academy and General Motors Institute. He was licensed as a professional engineer, the engineering profession's highest standard of competence.

Gene married Peggy Agee Benedict in 1961 in Christiansburg, Virginia. They were married for a total of 21 years.

Gene worked as a professional engineer for most of his professional life including foundational work as an environmental engineer in Virginia, as well as many years in the paper industry in Georgia and Alabama. He later founded Stone Mountain Applications.

Gene moved to Cedar Key, Florida, in 1996 where the community quickly adopted his nickname “Trouble.” For many years he authored a local column “Trouble in Cedar Key.”

Gene is survived by his partner of 23 years Anne Graham Miller, daughter Melanie Benedict, and sister Barbara Benedict Pickens, and was well loved by Anne’s son Michael Miller, son-in-law Brian Guehring, daughter Tracey Miller Tran, and granddaughters Lilly and Samantha Tran.

A celebration will be held in Cedar Key at a later date and will be announced in Cedar Key News. Memorial donations can be made to the University of Florida’s Nature Coast Biological Station in Cedar Key at ncbs.ifas.ufl.edu/donate.
