Dr. Joan Schleede Horn of Cedar Key died on October 27, while resting comfortably at Haven Hospice in Gainesville.

NOV 15 OBIT HORN PICJoan was born in Brooklyn, NY January 26, 1935 to John Fredrick Schleede and Elizabeth Stolz Schleede. She suffered the loss of her mother when she was just 14. Her father was a NYC Police detective. She and her brother enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Long Island in Knollwood Beach. Joan was an excellent student and athlete. She ran many summer camp programs for children, and often spent time with her brother’s children, Jeff, Derek and Adam. Jeff has fond memories of Noanie taking him to Yankee games, summer camp programs, and the beach.

Joan attended New York University, graduating with a PhD in physiology. She worked with Coach George Horn, at NYU for many years, and they eventually married and moved to Upper Montclair, NJ, where they both took positions at Montclair State University. Joan started a program with Dr. Walter Hasbrouck as part of his cardiac rehabilitation at Mountainside Hospital. She was chairwoman of her department and was the recipient of awards from the American Heart Association, Association for Fitness in Business, New Jersey Recreation and Park Association, and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Joan and George enjoyed spending time at their camp in Maine during summers. Joan moved from New Jersey to Hadlyme, CT, where she lived for five years during which she enjoyed building rock walls. In 2000 she bought her house in Cedar Key sight unseen. She moved here shortly after, still driving to Maine during summers. She was anonymously active in the community for many years, never wanting to be recognized for her efforts. She loved Cedar Key and her home on G Street.

Joan will be remembered for her generosity by many. She was an avid animal lover and had many great conversations, enjoying talks with the many out of towners that passed her house. Joan was a great mentor to many people, especially her great nephew, Jeffrey. Many of her former students kept in touch because of the impact she made on their lives. Her strong personality and warm heart will be missed by her family and friends.

Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Horn, and brother, John Schleede. She is survived by her nephews: John (Jeff) and wife Lori Schleede of Cedar Key; Derek and wife Monica Schleede of Brookhaven, NY; and Adam Schleede of Brookhaven, NY:, stepdaughter Debra Killloran of Staten Island, NY; granddaughter Casey Killoran of NYC, NY; sister in law Carol Schleede Chester of East Moriches, NY; and great nephews and nieces: John, Phil, Cara, Julia, Caitlin and Jeffrey Schleede.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be announced in the near future. Joan left the following reflection:

For What Do We Search?

It is inevitable that physical life is taken from each mortal being. The Lord, in his all-knowing wisdom, leaves these remains as a symbol of the tangible life – the soul, in its intangible form, becomes the spirit of transcendental communication between heaven and earth. In the soul has the Lord manifested his salvation . . . here, too, has he placed power and strength? To find the deeper, true strength, which is never lost though sometimes hidden, we must strive to live our lives in search of those qualities which reflect the soul’s countenance. Search for peace, forgiveness, humbleness and goodness toward all men.
