Have you seen it? - the crowd gathering at our beach front park?
Next time you’re there take a seat and watch as they run up and down the sandy, pebbly, seaweed covered shore, -up and back as fast as their two legs can carry them.
See if you can recognize the tall (15”) Willet, the smartly colored Ruddy Turnstones ((9”)doing what its name implies and the similar sized (11”) Short Billed Dowitchers whose long beak probes the sandy shore like a sewing machine’s needle. Now within this surging crowd are also the fast running Sanderlings and Western Sandpipers and, least of all, the Least Sandpiper (6”) keeping up and often out-running its taller mates.
And wouldn’t you know it, they leave their tracks behind them.
So next time you’re in the vicinity, take a seat and enjoy the antics of our beach front visitors.
