BROADBAND, HIGH-SPEED INTERNET TO BE TESTED IN CEDAR KEY
July 11, 2020
On Friday, July 10, 2020, Cedar Key News staff spoke to WiFiber Corporation President Michael Johns and received an encouraging update.
Johns has been working with Cedar Key Water and Sewer General Manager John McPherson, the city , and a small citizen group to establish a high-speed internet connection to Cedar Key. Johns offered to place his equipment atop the Cedar Key Water Tower and test the signal’s efficacy, most generously, at no cost to the CKWSD or the city.
Now, says Johns, most of the equipment, antennae and receiver, is in place on the tower. Given no complications, he estimates that the signal from Chiefland should be connected late in the week of July 13. The week after that, Johns intends to run his tests.
Johns is confident that all will work well. “We’ve been doing this for years,” he said. Service, during this testing period, will include City Hall, Cedar Key Library, the CKWSD, and other places on the island.
After the testing, additional information will come to Cedar Keyans about how and when they might access service. Cedar Key News will continue to provide updates.
