COMMISSIONERS VOTE TO
LIMIT ACCESS TO CEDAR KEY…
DETAILS TO COME SHORTLY;
PUBLIC APPLAUDS COMMISSION
March 23, 2020

This evening, March 23, 2020, Cedar Key city commissioners heard over eighty individuals energetically voicing their suggestions about how to respond to the coronavirus’s impact on Cedar Key.

Instead of one planned meeting, two meetings prevailed because the 6 pm meeting scheduled at the Cedar Key Community Center quickly morphed into two meetings because of overflow and seating capacity. Necessarily seating chairs six feet apart, in concert with the CDC’s separation guidelines, the first meeting’s seating capacity was fully filled with fifty or sixty seats; an additional twenty individuals stood along the walls. Doors were then closed, for safety’s sake, and a second group of approximately twenty were heard at 6:45 pm.

Mayor Heath Davis welcomed both groups, explained that Commissioner Jim Wortham had researched the issue of communities’ responses to the coronavirus, and called this meeting to hear from the community.

Wortham explained: The protection of our citizens is paramount. Restricting access now is essential before this virus becomes widespread in our area. Once a case has been confirmed in Levy County the time of most-effective use of this measure will have passed.

Due to the closing of all restaurants and bars, except for take-out, by Governor DeSantis, there are few services available for day visitors.

The overwhelming consensus of the eighty in the audience follows.
• Limit the “day trippers,” which includes visitors coming for a day in Cedar Key, individuals who rent rooms and homes in Cedar Key for the short term and sport fishermen.
• Minimize traffic to essential services, such as deliveries to the Market and the Marina Hardware, aquaculture, and the like.
• Limit island access to residents with a Hurricane Reentry Pass.
• Complete details will follow.

Resounding agreement occurred among realtors, restaurant owners, motel and rental lessors, other business owners, residents, and constant seasonal visitors. Audience members repeatedly voiced appreciation and robust compliments to commissioners’ action and care and concern for the community.

Mayor Davis was authorized by the commissioners to finalize the limitations of access to the area.
