Police Chief`s Report July 26

Police Chief Bubba Castell

The past two weeks have been rather uneventful for your Police Department, other than responding to calls for assistance by our local citizens and to assist the Levy County Sheriff`s Department, when called upon for backup.

There continues to be a problem of "missing bicycles," which almost always seem to reappear after a short period of time. Use by the unauthorized person, or persons who borrow them for unknown reasons can, and in all probability will, result in that person being arrested, if found in possession of the bike. The individual, or individuals, will be charged with a felony, if the bicycle`s value exceeds $300.00. This carries a sentence of five (5) years in the State Prison System. Therefore, please refrain from borrowing a bicycle without the owner`s consent, as it is not really worth the "joy ride" you may enjoy for a few days.

On July 21, 2006, at approximately 10 p.m., Vincent Quinn, age 18, was arrested by Corporal Eddie Merritt and Officer David Perry, and charged with Possession of Marijuana, more than 20 grams, a felony. Mr. Quinn was also charged with another felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to distribute, to-wit, Marijuana. Mr. Quinn of Cedar Key was booked into the Levy County Jail awaiting first appearance.

On July 23, 2006, at approximately 6 p.m., Officer David Perry responded to a call at 331 Dock Street, Cedar Key, reference a verbal disturbance. The complainant pointed to a male subject entering a green van, and Officer Perry followed the van, initiating a traffic stop at the Intersection of Second Street and C Street. The suspect exited the van, put his hands behind his back, and began cursing profusely. Officer Perry asked the suspect, Mr. Adam John McAvoy of Beverly Hills, FL, several times to place his hands on the hood of the patrol vehicle, and he finally complied. While Officer Perry attempted to "pat" Mr. McAvoy down for safety reasons, he removed his hands from the cruiser and attempted to turn around. Mr. McAvoy had to be restrained against the cruiser in order to be handcuffed. Mr. McAvoy was arrested by Officer Perry for Disorderly Intoxication, as he was very intoxicated at the time; and Resisting Arrest without Violence.

Officer Perry checked through the Florida Crime Information Center, due to Mr. McAvoy`s actions, and was advised that Mr. McAvoy had an Injunction Order out of Citrus County, stating that he is not to have contact with his mother, Ms. Leslie C. McAvoy, nor was he to be within 100 feet of her vehicle. Ms. Leslie C. McAvoy was the driver of the green van that Mr. McAvoy was traveling in at the time of his arrest on the aforementioned charges. Officer Perry charged Mr. McAvoy with Violation of an Injunction for Protection of Domestic Violence and was booked into the Levy County Jail on the three (3) charges, where he awaits first appearance.

Until next time, please keep it between the lines and your speed at, or below, the posted MPH. It is really great not having any DUI charges to report during the previous two weeks. Thanks for taking this precaution and thanks to the owners/managers of our local establishments for apparently providing designated drivers to take their patrons home, if they may have consumed a "little too much" to drive themselves.

REMEMBER: August 8, 2006, CEDAR KEY SCHOOLS BEGIN A NEW SCHOOL YEAR. Please be careful at all times, but especially when you see the "caution lights" flashing on Whiddon and G Streets, as the children will be going to and from school at that time. Your Police Department has a very low tolerance for speeding violations during these hours and to help ensure the safety of our children the traffic fines are doubled; so please comply with the 15MPB signs as posted. The child`s life you save could be your own; a relative; or a very close friend. We have been very fortunate in the past and we want to keep our perfect record intact. Also, please report any suspicious person, or activities, you may observe in the area of our children, as we no longer know everyone that lives, or visits, in our little community.
