Had some watermelon yet this season? Well, if not, or even if you have, you may want to know that more goes on with watermelons than scrumptious taste, juiciness, seeds, and seedlessness.
“The Florida Watermelon Association was formed to enable growers and marketers of Florida Watermelon Association to unite and through a concerted, organized membership work to promote the consumption of watermelons grown in Florida,” says the Florida Watermelon Association website at http://www.flfwa.com/
Important is the fact that the FWA annually selects and crowns a queen who makes it her business to travel through the United States and Canada as a spokesperson for the industry and the association.
Now…..do you know the energetic, positive, happy young lady who serves, cooks, and cleans at the Holey Moley Doughnut Shop on SCedar Key’s Second Street across from City Hall? She is restaurant owner Alicia Hammond’s daughter, Felicity Mejeris.
And……Felicity Mejeris will compete in the state FWA pageant in January 2016. The state pageant is in conjunction with the Florida Watermelon Association's annual convention. Just last week, Felicity won the Newberry competition.
Felicity’s new title is "70th annual Newberry Watermelon Festival Queen." After dinner and interviews with the judges were held Thursday, May 14, the pageant was held Friday, May 15. The festival and crowning was held Saturday, May 16. The pageant was held at Oak View Middle School in Newberry.
Drop by Holey Moley and congratulate the queen.
