The 21 seniors in the Cedar Key School’s Class of 2016 graduated this past Saturday, June 4, 2016, at 9 am in the gymnasium, a very warm gymnasium, in fact, that did not dampen the senior’s elated spirits.
Among the guests to the ceremony were Levy County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Hastings and current Bronson Middle School Assistant Principal and Cedar Key School-soon-to-be-principal Joshua Slemp.
Darby Allen, at exactly 9 am, welcomed the family, friends, faculty, and visitors in the audience, introduced the processional of gradates and a slide presentation of them, and oversaw the graduates ‘presentation of flowers to their parents.
Salutatorian Marissa Hand, with a 3.71 grade-point average, advised her fellows to forge forward and, if they make mistakes, to alter those mistakes by declaring a new direction. Valedictorian Noah Webster reminded his fellows that are a close group who rely and balance each other and should remain so. He further advised them that, “Once you have your support group, you’re ready to go!”
Instructor David Tomlin gave the commencement address. He reminded his students that they are all members of bands, bands of family, friends, etc. He advised that they should make good choices of these and future band members as they will bring harmony to their lives.
Scholarships and awards were embraced and abundant. The following honors were presented by spokespersons from the granting organizations. The scholarships and awards ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Diplomas were presented to the graduates by Levy County Superintendent Robert Hastings Board Member Chris Cowart, and Principal Darby Allen. Senior Class President Vaughn Quinn and Vice President Alora Beckham formally accepted the diplomas before the class’s recessional.
