The Cedar Key Public Library continues its 2021 Library Lecture Series by featuring Dr. John Jaeger on Thursday, February 11 at 5 pm at the Community Center.
John is an associate professor of geological sciences at UF who double-majored in Oceanography and Geology as an undergraduate at Humboldt State University in California.
The opportunity to work on the marine geology of the Amazon River and Ross Sea, Antarctica convinced him to move across country to Long Island to attend Stony Brook University for his graduate work. Life eventually brought him to UF and Gainesville where he is considered an expert in coastal oceanography and coastal marine geology. His specialties include the impact of changing sea-level on coastlines, glacial-marine environments, estuaries and as it so happens: sinkholes.
FEBRUARY 13, LESLIE STURNER
On Saturday, February 13 at 10:30 am, Leslie Sturmer, UF/IFAS, Extension, Cedar Key, and Bill Pine UF/IFAS, Department of Wildlife Ecology, Gainesville, will join us to update us on the Lone Cabbage Reef Restoration Project describing the recovery and resilience of oyster reefs in the Suwannee Sound where offshore oyster reefs have declined by 88% over the last 30 years.

Repeated events have led to nonreversible conversion from shell to sandbar substrate have led to the restoration of an existing, degraded oyster reef chain - the Lone Cabbage Reef. Leslie and Bill will give us an overview of the construction project, which was completed in 2019, and an update on monitoring efforts since then.
