Where are all the Bees?

Where are all the Bees?

Cedar Key Garden Club

"To Bee or Not to Bee....."

Are you an avid gardener who has noticed that your garden has fewer bees? Are your plants that used to produce seed 'like magic' not producing unless you hand-pollinate them? Are you missing that distinctive 'zzzzzz' in your flower beds? Think the price of southern fruit has gone up?

Where have the bees gone? How can we get them back?

Get some answers upstairs at the Library on Saturday, February 18 at 3:00 p.m. as Dr. Glenn Hall from the University of Florida gives a presentation on bees and the Varroa mite. These are invasive mites that are killing bees and crippling hives throughout the South. The impact of this is felt in your flowerbeds and it is felt in your purse, as bee-keeping is an integral part of the agricultural industry.

Dr. Hall has been involved with bees since the sixth grade. His career has taken him from a USDA Bee Lab to studying the genetics of other animals and then back to bees. He has been with UF's Entomology and Nematology Department since 1986 as a faculty member. His work there has included genetic identification of the African honey bees, and more recently, work on breeding mite-resistant bees.

Come join the Cedar Key Garden Club, Inc. for this informative and thought-provoking program.
