Argyle Savage teaches telescope basics at the library

A small but attentive audience learned how to set and use their home telescopes Wednesday, during one of the sessions of the library`s a.m.@the library series.

Argyle Savage, a winter visitor to Cedar Key, is a science instructor at Ivy Tech State College in Kokomo, IN. Through demonstrations with the library`s telescope and those brought in by audience members, Savage was able to teach the basics of setting up the equipment and enjoying the night skies.

Next week, the a.m.@the library program will feature Vic Doig, the Prescriptive Burn Specialist for the Lower Suwannee National Refuge, who will give a talk and show a video illustrating the principles of controlled burns to replenish the forest ecosystem.

This practice always raises questions as to its value. Doig, who has the reputation as a dynamic speaker, will have answers to those questions.

Library programs are always free and open to the public. Each program begins at 10:30 a.m.

Future programs include topics such as the language of flowers, historic restoration in Cedar Key, horseshoe crabs, progress of the whooping crane introduction and others.
