We`re a little late, but it`s time for the annual Ides of March Silent Film Festival at the Cedar Key Public Library! This is the 6th year for the event, one of the most popular programs offered at the library. We missed the Ides of March this year, but not by much. The event will take place at 7 p.m. this Friday evening, March 27. Many of our March visitors have inquired about the event, so we wanted to do it while they are still in Cedar Key. Due to the absence of our phenomenol piano player and MC, Jesse Beller, we are going to do something a little different this year. Over the years, many festival attendees have requested we show a Charlie Chaplin film. Due to the Chaplin estate`s requirement that his films be accompanied by his own scores and music, we were unable to offer a Chaplin film. This year, however, that will change. We will view one of Chaplin`s most popular films of all time: "The Gold Rush," originally made in 1925. And to make things even more interesting, this film is actually the first of Chaplin`s films he revived later on with a narration and complete sound track. The film, re-released in 1943, features several changes from the original, which will be explained at the showing Friday. This film is the library`s contribution to America`s current financial dilemma. You will learn a number of coping skills for dealing with the economic downturn, including: * how to deal with an "unmitigated predatory scum," (no, it`s NOT Bernard Madoff); * clever ways to keep from starving; * ways to increase your financial strength; * entertaining on the cheap; * fashion for the newly rich; .........and much more.
