Six 4-H youth and their families arrived early at the Levy County Extension Office in Bronson on Saturday, September 27, 2016. They were eager to participate in the annual poultry barbecue contest. They had to set up, get their grills ready and be able to light their fires by 8:30 am.
When the coals were ready, each youth was given a whole chicken to grill for up to two hours. By 10:30 am, the end of the grilling time, they had returned a half a chicken for judging. However, judges were already at work, as they had watched the youth prepare and grill their chickens, so as to judge their grilling and food safety skills. But the best (and worst) was yet to come for the judges as the taste-testing began at 10:30. The deliberation was long and difficult as there were several good grill masters.
Many thanks go to our judges of the day: Deana Scharnagl, Johnathan Hatch and Frances Watson. They worked long and hard to make their decisions.
Thanks also go to Muriel Turner, retired UF IFAS Levy County Extension FCS/4-H Agent for planning and conducting the contest this year while we are between 4-H agents. Thanks also go to Ariane Horton, who assisted Mrs. Turner with preparations and set-up of the contest.
Winners are as follows.
