G Street Project Action Stalled

G Street Project Action Stalled

Jim Hoy

Planning of a project to limit beach erosion along the southernmost four blocks of G Street, stalled on a two-to-two vote at the April 15 meeting of the Cedar Key City Commission.

The project's planning aspect is being done with a Sate of Florida grant by Jacksonville firm Olsen Associates. However, the city would need to pay for any permits for the project. Furthermore, actual construction costs have not yet been determined.

Commissioner Gene Hodges raised objections to the estimated $2,000 -$10,000 cost of permits. He further objected, saying we don't have the money for construction. Both Commissioner Vanessa Edmunds and Commissioner Sue Colson countered that state funding might be possible and that the planning process for this needed project is already funded.

Speaking from the audience, former commissioner Heath Davis called the project a joke. He added that the Olsen Associates representative was just a (project) salesman.

With Commissioner Pat O'Neal absent, Commissioner Colson's motion to proceed with planning, seconded by Commissioner Edmunds, failed in the face of no votes by Commissioners Paul Oliver and Gene Hodges.

Although efforts to revive the issue were scuttled by Commissioner Hodges' parliamentary action, Mayor Oliver announced that the issue would be put on a future commission agenda.
