Two opponents for a seat on the Cedar Key Commission, Heath Davis and Bryan Skarupski, held a press conference April 29 to announce Skarupski's withdrawal from the campaign and his endorsement of Davis. Davis said, "We feel we have the same views and it is healthier to move forward and Bryan drop out." Skarupski concurred, adding that it is better for everybody. Furthermore, he said that he will attend Commission meetings and run for a seat in the future. Davis said, in reference to his letter to the citizens last year in which he cited family and business responsibilities for nor running for reelection, he now wants to be more involved in the City Commission. He wants to bring change to the Police Department. Regarding an April 28 police-citizen confrontation, Davis had no comment. Skarupski said it should have been "defused." The event resulted in a man being tazed three times and being transported to Levy County Jail. Turning to a recent issue, Davis said that revision of Cedar Key's noise ordinance requires common sense. "It is a community—everyone has to give and take. Everyone should complain a little less." The press conference moved into discussion of purchase of land with Community Redevelopment money. Regarding the City's purchase of a house and lot next to the City Library, Davis said they can be used for whatever the citizens want, but land acquisition should be studied before any more expenditures.
In response to the suggestion of a Citizens Police Review Commission to look into complaints of police behavior, Davis expressed disapproval, saying the Commission is responsible for police oversight. He and Skarupski appear to be in full agreement regarding changes in the Police Department. |
