Horseshoe Crab Signs Inform Public

Horseshoe Crab Signs Inform Public

ANNOUNCEMENT

Kathleen Tuck shows one of the Horseshoe Crab Information signs currently posted around the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge

Recently signs were posted on many of the beaches around Cedar Key and offshore islands that are known as spawning areas for horseshoe crabs. The signs inform the public about the activities of horseshoe crabs and spawning season and urge the public to use caution when accessing the shoreline.

This project was initiated by Kathleen Tuck who has been conducting crab surveys for several years in the area. With some funding obtained through Florida Sea Grant and the City of Cedar Key and approval obtained from the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, the signs were developed by Kathleen and Leslie Sturmer.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission is conducting a survey of spawning beaches. Report sightings of horseshoe crab activities by calling the toll-free number 1-866-252-9326 or by completing an online survey at http://research.myfwc.com/horseshoe_crab/
