The Cedar Key Volunteer Fire Department (CKVFD) announced dramatic reductions in local fire insurance costs at its open house May 31. That announcement comes as a result of a Public Protection Classification done during the past year. Insurance companies base their rates on such evaluations of the quality of protection provided by local fire departments. The high quality of the CKVFD in terms of equipment and staff training has given the department a rating of 5 for most of Cedar Key and a rating of 8 for the Airport Area. In each case an improvement. These are improved ratings over last year's and should result in about a twenty percent reduction in fire insurance rates according to Assistant Fire Chief Robert Robinson. Furthermore, once the new water main to the Airport Area is completed the classification and insurance rates will improve for residents in that area. Saturday's open house was also an opportunity to honor three volunteer fire fighters for length of service. Fire Chief James McCain was presented with a plaque for his thirty years in the department. Ken Daniels received a plaque for his fifteen years of service. And Jamie McCain was honored for his ten years in the department. The CKVFD not only responds to fires but also renders service during medical and disaster situations. Assistant Chief Robinson addressed the open house crowd on two aspects of departmental emergency responses. He showed an example of a green reflective street number sign that residents are encouraged to display to speed response of emergency vehicles. Secondly, Robinson spoke of the need for a fire-rescue boat that has been considered for some time. An effort to purchase a used boat has been delayed, but the department hopes to eventually find an appropriate boat.
