Two weeks after the Cedar Key Commission declined to renew Police Chief Bubba Castell's appointment the Commission appointed Virgil Sandlin Interim Police Chief. Sandlin, a retired veteran of twenty-nine and one half years as a Florida Highway Patrol officer, is well-known in Cedar Key, having lived on the island for many years. In an interview with Cedar Key News, Chief Sandlin said the problems (leading to Chief Castell's departure), "didn't get this way overnight and won't be solved overnight." He added that, "There is nothing that can't be overcome." The enforcement of Cedar Key's current and proposed noise ordinances were discussed at the Commission meeting prior to Sandlin's appointment. Sandlin said during the interview that some motorcycles appear not to have mufflers, but are legal due to baffles in the exhaust pipe. However, he said that violations of noise ordinances can be based on noise measured by sound measurement equipment. Mayor/Commissioner Heath Davis followed the announcement of Chief Sandlin's appointment with notice of an imminent search for a permanent Chief, with Ruth Hernandez organizing the search. Commissioner Scott Dennison recommended including in the search process peer review by a panel of three professional law enforcement officers. |
