CKS, COMMUNITY WORK TOGETHER CARING FOR MULTIPURPOSE COURT
September 15, 2019
The Multipurpose Court at Cedar Key School continues to enjoy the support of the community, residents, visitors, and the school’ students and personnel. Truly a community effort, the area is well utilized now with healthy activity.
New physical education tea Brandon Hutton uses it regularly with his students. Community members play tennis regularly on weekends. Visitors often borrow balls and rackets from the Welcome Center and enjoy the area. Kids play on it all the time.
What was once a weed-strewn, broken fenced, peripherally forsaken space for years was transformed into a functional, attractive, safe, properly fenced area complete with an information kiosk and a bench, table, and chairs upon which to relax.
This past Tuesday, September 10, the new court “care takers” met. Unfortunately, gone is mover, shaker, painter, weight room completer, and more Bill Heckler who has moved to Gainesville. Also gone is Coach Miller, off to another school in Levy County.
Constant, however, and ever active, productive, and innovative are Principal Kathy Lawrence, Parent Teacher Organization President and Levy teacher Lisa Custer, and stalwart Sue Colson. The three were joined by new instructor Brandon Hutton, and parent Mark DeHaven.
Since the last meeting, signage has been completed and a water fountain installed. One sign captures the name of every person who helped make the court renovation possible and thanks them.
Plans for the next several months include: the Cedar Key Boy Scouts will build an additional bench; Instructor Hutton will research basketball striping for the court; Lawrence and Hutton will research replacing the equipment locker.
The care takers plan to meet again before winter break, report their progress, and make decisions about the court’s Phase Two needs.
