CEDAR KEYS AUDUBON READIES CREATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS

September 24, 2019

DSCN4589Prompted by another outrageously generous, energetic, and artsy project emerging from the mind of Cedar Keys Audubon’s Education Chairperson Maureen Magee, six folks gathered today at Cedar Key School. Their mission was CKA’s mission: to foster knowledge of birds and conservation…and the best place to start was, of course, with little ones…elementary school students at Cedar Key’s own school.

Magee’s plan is to have each youngster paint, decoupage, and otherwise decorate his/her own bird house. For inspiration, Magee has multitudes of conservation magazines students may read, thumb through, and cut. Each student will have his own paint box.   Success, fun, and learning will happen tomorrow, Wednesday, September 25, 2019.

Time, however, was the issue today. The bird houses must be ready by the October 19 – 20 Seafood Festival; they will adorn the Audubon booth. Complicating the situation is the fact that students only meet in art class one day a week. There was no time to waste.

SEPT 24 CKA MaskSooo….Magee’s crew gathered to assemble the bird houses. With typical Oriental Trading directions that contained not a written word, the six studied the 96 balsa bird house kits for a moment, then did the deed.DSCN4591

What emerged one hour later were 96 balsa bird houses ready for children to decorate the next day and six happy assemblers.

Last year’s Audubon effort involved students creating wearable bird masks and decorating them with feathers and crayons. Students learned about different birds, dragged their parents to the Audubon booth at the Cedar Key Arts Festival to view their artwork, and enjoyed every moment of it.

Magee continues to outdo herself with conservation ally worthwhile and wonderfully enjoyable ideas.
