HISTORICAL SOCIETY RECEIVES GIFT FROM CRYSTAL RIVER BOAT BUILDERS
November 22, 2019
On Friday, November 15, 2019, the Crystal River Boat Builders (CRBB) presented the Cedar Key Historical Society (CKHS) a six-foot replica of the Union Blockade Ship, the USS Ft. Henry. The USS Ft. Henry, with a crew of 60-100 sailors and marines, took part in “Plan Anaconda,” the Union’s plan to choke the supply lines to Confederate soldiers. During its time here the USS Ft. Henry captured perhaps a dozen ships.
In the early part of the Civil War, it was not going well in the north for the Union. However, they could not build boats fast enough to shore up the blockade. The Union commissioned a steam-powered ferryboat to join the blockade of the Gulf coast.
The CRBB worked on the project for two years. It was delicate and intricate work aSe) and Commander McCauly (Lew Zerfas). The impressive food included clams, turkey, clam chowder from Tony’s, shrimp and grits, vegetables, and sweets. Two bars kept everyone hydrated.
Last but not least was the drawing for three fiber brushed in a shadow box, gift basket, and CDs. Even if you missed the party, the USS Ft. Henry will be a permanent exhibit and you can visit the CKHS Museum from 1-4 daily and 11-4 on Saturdays.
