Cedar Key Man Awarded Korean Defense Service Medal

Press Release

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite (FL-5) presented nine Levy County veterans with the Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM) this past Saturday, February 5th. The KDSM is a new Department of Defense award to give special recognition for the sacrifices and contributions of those who have served or are serving in the Republic of Korea. She also presented two area veterans with the Korean War Service Medal at the ceremony.

"Over half a century ago, thousands of brave men and women served in the U.S. Armed Forces and defended the Korean Peninsula. Their heroic efforts helped maintain democracy and preserve the spirit of freedom for millions," said Rep. Brown-Waite. "I am honored to present Cedar Key`s own Michael Engel with this medal honoring his service and to formally thank him and his family for their commitment and sacrifices."

The KDSM became available in February of 2004 and Rep. Brown-Waite reached out to the local veterans` community to find eligible applicants. Rep. Brown-Waite`s office then worked with the veterans and the Department of Defense (DOD) to secure the medals. For more information on the KDSM, visit the DOD`s website at
