Cedar Key Hosts College and Career Fair By Lindsay Edmunds The students at Cedar Key High have been given a great opportunity: to have a college and career fair at CKS. Most fairs such as this are held in larger towns and cities so most students from Cedar Key are not able to attend, whereas this college and career fair is right in the students' backyard! It will also give them the chance to be exposed to the different alternatives that they have after graduating high school. The fair will be held on October 8th in the Cedar Key High School Auditorium from 6pm to 8pm for all 8th through 12th graders. A wide variety of colleges and careers will be available for the students to explore: Santa Fe Community College, Central Florida Community College and their Educational Opportunities Program, Lake City Community College, St. Leo's College, The University of Florida's College of Medicine, Lincoln College, The Florida Culinary Institute, Progress Energy, USDA Natural Resources, and the Levy County EMS. The US Army, Navy and Marines will also be attending. Cross Country - Mt. Dora and Yankeetown By Caely Hibbits The Cedar Key Cross-County team left at 6:00a.m on Saturday morning to run at Mt. CKS Opens Doors to Community Colleges By Lindsay Edmunds On choosing careers and colleges, John Piersol, a professor at Lake City Community College, put on a presentation for students in grades 8-12 at CKS. Mr. Piersol gave a motivating, informational speech about everything from the advantages of community colleges to how to become successful. He also informed the students that in order to take the best advantage of the opportunity that they've been given, free schooling, they should take the most challenging courses taught by the hardest teachers, in order to be best prepared for college and their life ahead. Mr. Piersol warned the students that if they did not take challenging classes and thus were not prepared for average college classes, they would have to take college preparatory courses that could cost them $1500 just to learn things they could have learned at their public high school for free. During his discussion, Mr. Piersol spoke about the formula for success: Success= Opportunity + (Attitude + Work Ethic), and furthermore how to achieve each of its variables/components. Additionally, Mr. Piersol said that throughout your life you will go from learning in school to earning at work to yearning for retirement. Mr. Piersol also spoke about the advantages of attending a community college rather than a university for your freshman year. Two of the advantages he named were smaller class sizes and a more personal classroom environment for a better learning experience. Mrs. Forney taught the students about Zora Neal Hurston, an African American woman who traveled around the state of Florida collecting writings and songs. The Levy and Alachua County Public Library System was able to hire Mrs. Ada, because of a program referred to as "The Big Read", which has been used to arrange this program as well as others. Ms. Sherie Johns, the 4th grade teacher, said that Mrs. Ada was, "...very interactive and the kids loved her." Varsity Volleyball Team Victorious! I'm very proud of the team." And she had every right to be proud.
