Cedar Key Teacher Earns National Certification

Staff & Students of Cedar Key School

De Anne Watson

De Anne Watson, third grade teacher at Cedar Key School, has achieved National Board Certification. National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward great teachers.

Those who achieve this honor have met rigorous standards through intensive study and refining of their craft. As part of the process, teachers must complete four portfolios that include student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. In addition, teachers are tested on their knowledge of the subjects they teach.

Mrs. Watson joins an elite group of teachers who continue to demonstrate excellent classroom practice and mentor other teachers, as they support the teaching profession. There are currently twenty-four nationally certified teachers in Levy County. Mrs. Watson will be honored by the School Board in January.

While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, NBCTs have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete.

As part of the process, teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, teachers are assessed on their knowledge of the subjects they teach.
