Cedar Key Student Advertisers

By Lindsay Edmunds

The nine fifth grade students in Ms. Patty Lawrence`s class are learning about advertising, and what better way to learn than to try it out for themselves?

The objective of the advertising unit was for students to be able to critique ads and learn about the different factors that make up an advertisement, such as focal point.

After looking through magazines and getting a feel for what makes an advertisement successful, the students were instructed to select a common noun and design an ad of their own.

These ads were then sent to Ms. Patty`s daughter, Ronette Lawrence, who works in advertising with Microsoft in Seattle, Washington. Ronette gave the students tips and critiqued their work.

After the students tweaked their advertisements, their polished ads were sent to Ronette once again by Ms. Patty. Unbeknownst to the students, the advertisements were printed in magazines whose subject matter related specifically to that of each student`s ad.

When Ms. Patty received the magazines that held the students` advertisements, she casually passed them out to each student, watching intently for their reactions. One by one the students found their ads in the magazines, and were ecstatic to see their work in print.

Each of the nine students involved - Noah Webster, Daniel Allen, Alora Beckham, Erica Shirey, Walker Emrick, Giovanni Slifko, Jay Quinn, Jesse Brown, and Jeremiah Barnes - thoroughly enjoyed the advertising unit. To show their appreciation and gratitude, the students sent thank you notes to Ronette.
