Cross Country Team Takes Home Three Firsts By Caely Hibbits Shark Correspondent The High School Boys finished first as a team at the Chiefland Cross Country meet. Individual wins were Devin Littlefield, middle school boys and Lauren Bartholemy, middle school girls. Devin Littlefield ran a 19:50, this was a personal record. Lauren Bartholemy ran a 23:30, which places her as the tenth all time runner from Cedar Key. Coach Brad Penney said "I had a great time at last night`s meet. I saw a lot of good racing from our team." Today is the team`s home cross country meet. It begins at 4:30 p.m. The Juniors and Seniors on the cross country team, hosted a run-a-thon. The profits from their hour long run went directly into the account to pay admission fees for a race that will be held at Disney World this weekend. It is a 10K race, which is about 6.2 miles. "Box Tops for Education" By Caely Hibbits Shark Correspondent Since the beginning of the school year Malinda Roland has been collecting Box Tops for the school. So far $118.00 worth of box tops have been brought in. These box tops are on many products throughout the grocery store from Kleenex to Cereal. The box top money will go into the general fund of the school. Last year the general fund purchased locks for middle school. Another way to earn money is Campbell soup cans. The barcode of these cans are sent in and the school earns points. Cedar Key has recently collected enough can labels to purchase a "Math Shark" this will be used in the ESE classroom for math study grade levels 3rd-8th. The school would greatly appreciate the community to send in these labels and box tops. With budget cuts any extra funds are helpful and will be used with gratitude. Recycling Rehab By Zoe Stuber Shark Correspondent Cedar Key High School Student Government (SGA) is working with the Energy Advisory Panel of Cedar Key to "green" the school. In conjunction with the city, the school is initiating an intense recycling "rehabilitation" program to raise awareness among the students and teachers and all others who visit the campus. At the first SGA meeting of the year student members met with Ms. Eileen Bowers, a representative of the Energy Advisory Panel of Cedar Key to discuss the first steps in launching this plan off the ground. These included making a thorough evaluation of the recycling receptacles around the campus to see which areas needed more recycling containers or better labeling of the containers. To make the containers more distinguishable, SGA asked Ms. Debby Manansala to have her students put their handprints on the bins in blue and green paint. The recycling signs around school now bear the motto, "Our Hands Are Green." At the first annual Levy Association of Student Councils (LASC) meeting, the four schools in Levy County also decided to make recycling the yearly project. So, in addition to the recycling measures that are taking place on the Cedar Key School campus, actions are being taken county-wide to improve the recycling programs at each of the four schools. It was also determined that the recycling would be a competition between the schools. The school that shows the highest total percentage of participation in all recycling activities planned throughout the year will get a party for the whole school paid for and thrown by the neighboring schools` student government. To qualify for the school party, each school must document all of their projects completed and also complete certain required projects. One of these is a "Carpool Challenge," where each school must reduce the number of cars coming to campus on a set day. Impartial judges selected by the LASC will evaluate each school`s performance and determine the winner early this spring. Teen Trendsetters By Claire Brown Shark Correspondent The Teen Trend Setters Mentor Program has begun for this school year. In case you are unfamiliar with Teen Trend Setters, it`s a program where one high school student is paired up with one 2nd or 3rd grade student to read after school one day a week for about one hour. Ms. DeAnne Watson, third grade teacher, is the advisor of Teen Trendsetters and Sara Miller, senior, is the Lead Teen Trendsetter. This is the fourth year that CKS has offered the program and 20 High School students have signed up to be mentors. The purpose of Teen Trend Setters is to help elementary students improve their reading skills while building a relationship with someone they normally wouldn`t. There are also advantages for the teenagers that participate in the program; they will receive community service hours for the time spent with their mentees. (A certain number of community service hours are required to be eligible for certain scholarships.) Each time a mentor meets with his/her mentee they will start by reading an educational article out of a magazine, provided by the program. They will either read together or the mentee will read to his/her mentor. After reading they answer questions together about the article they read. Once this is finished they spend the rest of the hour reading books that, once finished, the mentee will get to take home for his/her home library. Some of the books are AR tests and can be tested on for points at school.
