At approximately 3:30 pm, Wednesday afternoon Helmut Eduardo Moya Garzon, while attempting to land at the Cedar Key George T. Lewis airstrip, overshot the end of the runway, coming to a stop across the road, just beyond the grass, and onto the water’s edge just north of the  airport landing strip.

Evidence at the site indicates that the 41-year-old Garzon approached the landing strip from the southwest (the winds were from the southwest), came in high and attempted to land. Garzon said he had a “problems with his left brake.”

On the scene, Cedar Key Police Chief Virgil Sandlin reported that the pilot flew from New Smyrna Beach, Florida.  Pilot Garzon reported to the Cedar Key News staff that he was a licensed pilot with some 800 hours in tow working towards his commercial rating.

Sometime around 6:00 pm, Police Chief Virgil left the crash site and returned with equipment to attempt to salvage the plane from the marsh. The salvage attempt was successful and just before dark the plane was back on solid land.
