SICK RACCOONS
IN CEDAR KEY
January 28, 2015
Sick raccoons are in Cedar Key. Fourteen have been “dispatched,” killed, in the past two weeks, reports Police Chief Virgil Sandlin.
Should you spy a sick raccoon, understand that it could be suffering from a multitude of illnesses including rabies and distemper. These illnesses are extremely dangerous to dogs and other domesticated animals, and some to humans.
Sick raccoon symptoms are any aberrant behaviors: excessive slowness, partial paralysis, vomiting, and seizures. Affected domesticated animals’ symptoms mimic the sick raccoon’s symptoms.
Chief Sandlin's advice is to:
-
Be certain your animals are vaccinated. If not, do so immediately.
-
If you come in contact with a sick raccoon, stay away from it, and telephone the Cedar Key Police at 543-5132.
