 COMMUNITY GARDEN WORK DAY …LOGO COMM GRDN image
ENJOYED BY ALL
March 31, 2017

DSCN3616Much, much work and many, many tasks were completed this past Wednesday, March 29, at the Cedar Key Community Garden.   From eight to early two in the afternoon, the group stopped only for scrumptious 1842 Daily Grind scones and coffee and, of course, Deverin-provided bottles of cool, refreshing water.   Good fellowship, great company, and accomplishment were the orders of the day, all under the expert leadership of Tom Deverin (ever so elusive to the camera).DSCN3615

A new irrigation system was installed with Joe Hand and Alban Cyr mechanizing the operation while Bill Seyfert, our new-Canadian-best-friend Pierre, and Gene Higa dug the trench that now runs from the north beds to the south and the west of the Garden.   The system will keep the Garden’s front flower area and the length of the trellis hydrated through the summer months on a timed system.

DSCN3621 Beth Mizell, Linda Seyert, Kathy Sturr, and Mandy Offerle laid irrigation hose throughout the area and covered it with mulch.  Pat Deverin tended all the wildflowers surrounding the two palm trees mid-garden.  Sue Colson's nasturshiums punctuated the beauty of the Garden.DSCN3618

Jeri Treat fertilized the flowering shrubs. Maria Sgambati and Sam Gibbs built berms, laid insulation, and covered with shells the two crepe myrtles so that water will not drain away.  Lois Benninghoff hauled away debris in her golf cart.

Indeed, a fine time was had by all and the Garden even lovelier than before (if that is possible).

COMMUNITY GARDEN WORK DAY!
Y’ALL COME!
March 27, 2017

To the Community of Cedar Key,
This coming Wednesday, March 29th, from 9 am until ? we will have another work day.  If you're an early riser, folks will be at the Garden at 8 am.  Please make it to this event, if you can, so and help us with the Cedar Key Community Garden.  Everyone has a part to play, all are welcome. Appropriate tools would be shovels, rakes, post hole diggers, pitch forks, etc. and of course your smiles.

To Community Gardeners,
We need you and your energy at the work day.  Nothing very strenuous will be necessary, but all hands need to be on deck.  We've got spiffing up to do for the Festival.  We've an irrigation line to lay, plants to plant, others to move to a better location, mulch to move, shells to place, and more.  Bring your tools, gloves, and rakes, in particular.

GARDEN CLUB ENJOYS CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON
December 17, 2016

GrdnClbMtg 7615xeThe Cedar Key Garden Club members and others gathered at the traditional Christmas Luncheon at the Episcopal Church Meeting Hall this past Wednesday, December 14, at noon.

Lovely, festive, and native, of course, centerpieces of Dahoon Holly cuttings and pine cones, graced the tables, Donna Thalacker creations.

President Roger McDaniels welcomed all and proceeded with the business part of the meeting.   Items he discussed included the following.
Vice-President Joe Hand spoke about the Cedar Key School Agriculture class coming to the Community Garden on Tuesday, December 13, where they learned a great deal, got their hands dirty, transplanted new sprouts, and tasted sage-seasoned cookies and salad with kale and other ingredients grown in the Garden.  Delighted students walked away asking for the recipes.

Tom Deverin presented to the luncheon participants plantings from the Community Garden ready for replanting at home.   These plantings were gathered and wrapped for transport to the luncheon by the Cedar Key School Agriculture students.  These included broccoli and cauliflower.

COMMUNITY GARDENERS
AT IT, AGAIN!
November 15, 2016

DSCN3491

Responding to community desires, wants, or wishes, or needs, Community Garden Leader Tom Deverin and his band of builders constructed three new raised, four-by-ten foot garden beds this past Thursday, November 10.DSCN3492

The perfect 70-degree temperature, low humidity, and the fine company made the tasks a pleasure.  Materials were ordered, gathered, transported to the garden; beds were built; the cardboard needed to place below the soil in the bed to hold water was gathered; wheelbarrows of soil were loaded and placed into the beds.  More weeding, cleanup, and bed planting filled the day.

The three new beds are located on the northeast side of the garden closest to Third Street.  Come on by and take a look.

COMMUNITY GARDEN’S FIRST WORK DAY
TURNS EVERYTHING GREEN AND FRESH
November 12, 2016

Some twenty gardeners gathered at the Community Garden on Second Street in Cedar Key for its first workday of the season, November 1, 2016.  And work, they did.

DSCN3473

They mowed the rear lawn;
they tidied up leftover cardboard;
they reulched year-old beds, tossing and
turning soil and adding nutrients and fresh mulch;
they transplanted sprouts to newly mulched beds;
they cleaned the shell walkway;
they weeded and planted the flower beds;
they uprooted weeds from the garden’s periphery;
they added fresh mulch to the ground around the beds;
they weeded the trellis;
they replanted the community bed from which transplants come.

DSCN3475

The carpentry team, Alban Cyr, Joe Hand, Tom Deverin, and others,  added a new trellis, placed immediately to the right as you enter the garden through the gate on Second Street.  This trellis displays the Cedar Key Arts Center’s pieces.

DSCN3477

Best of all were the folks new to the garden.  They seeded or transplanted sprouts into their newly assigned beds with the help of the rest of the gardeners.

In about three weeks, several kinds of vegetables ready to transplant: cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, and three types of lettuce etc.

Gardener or not, do drop by the Community Garden and enjoy the incredible number of butterflies, greens, and blooming flowers.  All are welcome!

THIS SATURDAY.....
COMMUNITY GARDEN WORK DAY!
Y’ALL COME!
March 10, 2016

To the Community of Cedar Key,

This coming Saturday, March 12th, from 10:00 until ? we will have another work day with lunch provided.  We will complete the Garden as originally conceived, if we have enough help.

Royce Nelson will once again bring his skid steer and we will install the central shell roadway and complete the landscaping along the new section of trellis and install the communal tool rack.

The brush pile has been chipped.  I put down some mulch around my bed to see how it worked and it works real well, nice mulch.  It was easy with the cart, one rounded cart load will do the length of a bed nicely.  Simply put the cart to the end of the area that you are going to mulch, lift up the handle, and walk backwards lifting the handle more as you go and the mulch slides out pretty evenly spread.  Y'all can do that yourselves and what hasn't been mulched will be done on Saturday.

So please make it to this event, if you can, so that we can knock out the Cedar Key Community Garden.  Everyone has a part to play, all are welcome. Appropriate tools would be shovels, rakes, post hole diggers, pitch forks, etc. and of course your smiles.

 CEDAR KEY’S COMMUNITY GARDEN
GRANDLY OPENS
February 2, 2016

FEB 2 CG Opng 0614 xe

On the perfectly sunshine-laden, 65-degree temperature morning, some forty-five Cedar Key gardeners, gardeners-to-be, wannabe-gardeners, and community members and supporters enjoyed the brief and information-laden Cedar Key Community Grand Opening yesterday at ten am.

Community Garden Leader Tom Deverin thanked the many people making the Garden possible:  the Garden Clubbers, the treasurer, sign designer, sign painter, gate designer and builder, banner designers and sewers, garden bed makers, skid steerers, hammrers, drillers, wire cutters, trench diggers, compost haulers, garden bed cardboard-base fillers, plastic liner staplers, limb cutters, trellis builders, trellis foundation hole diggers, cement pourers, rakers, weed pullers, mulchers, step builders, step painters,and many more.

The following invocation was presented by gardener by Peggy Herrick:
Grace of the Sun                                                   FEB 2 CG Opng 0589 xe
The Silver Rain,
The Shining Sun,
The fields where scarlet poppies run,
And all the ripples in the wheat,
Are in the bread that we do eat,
So when we sit, and share a meal,
And say a grace, we always feel
That we are eating rain and sun
And fields where scarlet poppies run.

Blessings on this land that will provide
meals for us and our community.
Adapted from a prayer by Alice C. Henderson.

Deverin reported that over twenty-five individuals participated in the four work days that have occurred, that the Garden is up and running a month ahead of schedule, and over $6,000 has been donated to the establishment of the Garden. FEB 2 CG Opng 0626 xe

Mayor Heath Davis briefly recounted a 1920s Cedar Key tale that exemplified how the Garden itself is in concert with Cedar Key history:  the island and its people are proud to and try to take care of the island and themselves.

FEB 2 CG Opng 0576 xe

Commissioner Sue Colson presented Deverin with a gold gardening spade.  Commissioner Royce Nelson expressed thanks that he and his wife were able to help in this community endeavor.
Deverin and his wife Pat, armed with multiple choices of seeds, then gave all those gardeners present wishing guidance lessons on transplanting sprouts, planting seeds, fertilizing, and more.

what a community, what a Garden Club!

COMMUNITY GARDEN WORKDAY…MUCH DONE…
MUCH MORE ENJOYED
January 7, 2016,    Updated January 11, 2016

An energetic, dedicated group of some eighteen individuals “just got things done,” as Tom Deverin would say, at the Cedar Key community Garden this past Monday, January 4.  Folks in the 32625 ZIP code to as far away as North Carolina took part.

Approximately forty additional plants found new homes in the earth:  bougainvillea, Turks cap, jasmine, honeysuckle, anthurium, oxalis, and more.  The entire area was mulched for moisture control.

Old fences were rooted out, post holes were dug, and a pre-stained trellis was erected on the west side, adding color and texture to the Garden.

Another ten-by-four-foot bed was manufactured.   One bed, constructed and planted a month ago, now flourishes with lettuce, kale, spices, and, of course, petunias are blooming.  Another bed was planted with more lettuce, snow peas, kale, and more.  The Garden now has three full beds.

Best of all was the camaraderie and the sumptuous luncheon served by Pat and Tom Deverin.  Beans, Johnny-cake, corn bread, cole slaw, and the best cookies ever baked made the rest of the work even more enjoyable.

Everyone is welcome..
We hope to see you at the next work day.

January 2, 2015

Dear Community Gardeners (and everyone who wants to help make things greener in this land):

There will be another work party at the Community Garden, on January 4th at 10:00 am. Once again a delicious lunch will be provided. Bring all tools that you think might be needed. We will be working on the western boundary, cleaning it up, installing trellises and planting more plants.

BEAUTIFY CEDAR KEY…
WHAT A START!
December 31, 2015

Nine folks dedicated to beautifying Cedar Key meet yesterday morning in the Cedar Key RV Presort Clubhouse nine miles north of Cedar Key on State Road 24.

Bunny Hand led the group and explained that she was not asking for money; indeed, she said, many money requests are present already around town.  Instead, Hand asked for physical help in the beautification effort.

The group overviewed some projects soon to come.  Some of these ideas were suggested by Cedar Key Commissioner Sue Colson.  Hand, ably assisted by Joe Hand, came prepared with a video showing many of the areas of which show was to highlight.

  • The area directly across from the Market on State Road 24 will gain a bench and small eating area if the location can be cleaned up, neatened up, and cared for regularly.
  • Cedar Key enjoys a lush canopy of well over 150 Heritage trees, trees that have been deemed valuable because of species, age, of significant size, aesthetic, historical or horticultural value,  and worthy of care.  Many are located on city property.  Several Heritage bay trees have died recently because of the laurel wilt disease infecting the area.  The expired trees need replacement. DEC 29 SUNFLOWER images
  • An Education Day, which would help residents and visitors understand what plants are native, what plants are invasive, how to properly care for mangroves, etc.,   may occur in March of 2016.
  • Arbor Day will precede the Cedar Key Garden Club’s March 5 Plant Sale and will focus on encouraging residents and visitors to plant trees and increase the canopy.
  • The need for additional shade trees in City Park was mentioned.
  • Conversation occurred about replacing the spartina grass, currently around the Marina area, with muhly grass.
  • Weed pulling, whenever weeds are seen, is enthusiastically encouraged by Bunny Hand.  “The weeds that pop up between concrete sidewalks sections drive me crazy,” says Hand.
  • Participant Kathy remarked on the difficulty off litter.  Perhaps, a “do not litter” campaign could be planned.

The group decided upon a January 21 Cedar Key Beautification Work Day.  The group will meet and begin working across the street from the Market at 9 am.  They plan to work until approximately 12 noon.  Hand also encouraged everyone to certainly work on their own at whatever they see that would beautify Cedar Key.

DEC 29 SUNFLOWER imagesAll Garden Club members and friends are invited to the Cedar Key RV Resort Clubhouse at 10 am, Wednesday, December 30, 2015, to learn about ways we can beautify Cedar Key.

Sue Colson has suggested some small projects, and we are interested in any suggestions.  This should be a fun way to keep your hands "in the dirt", and to make a visible difference in our town. The meeting will be short and productive!

Joe and Bunny Hand will be there to hear your ideas and make plans.

Thank you!!
