NEW CKPOTTERY 2019

OWL RESCUE

July 1, 2021

JULY 1 OWL PICNewcomers to Cedar Key, Patrick Callen and Daniel Wal, didn’t hesitate for a minute when Dennis and Renee Schneck’s dog sensed something unusual in the bushes near the end of 7th Street.

Huddled on the side of the road, a Great Horned Owl peered out from the foliage, too hurt to move.

Patrick and Daniel quickly retrieved a pet carrier from their house nearby. Then, with the help of Dennis, the three rescuers gently and cautiously placed the bird in the carrier, staying clear of those talons!

“Now what?” they wondered.

A phone call to the Cedar Key Bird Rescue Team provided the answer: Transport the injured owl to Paul Shearer in Inglis, who would then relay the bird to Nature World Wildlife Sanctuary in Homosassa.

Wasting no time, Patrick and Daniel loaded the carrier into the car and headed south on a wildlife rescue mission.

The owl has since been seen by a veterinarian, and was then sent to Nature World Wildlife Sanctuary to mend.  When he is well, he will be returned to Cedar Key.

Thank you to Dennis and his dog for noticing an animal in distress and initiating action. Thank you to Patrick and Daniel for their concern for our island’s wildlife, and their willingness to ensure this owl’s rehabilitation and return to the wilds.
