December 18, 2020
Barbara Jean Henkin, 79, of Lapeer formerly Ohio, died Tuesday, December 15, 2020. She was born November 3, 1941, in Detroit to parents Carl and Lillian (Wilbur) Johnson. Barbara married Sidney B. Henkin on October 2, 1970, in Steubenville, OH.
Mrs. Henkin was always fond of her Peace Corp time, after all; it’s where she met her husband, Sid. She actually remained active with the Returned Peace Corp Volunteers organization. Professionally, Barbara taught at the elementary level, was a guidance counselor and adult education teacher. Volunteering forever remained a fundamental part of Barbara’s life; from a fire fighter at one point to being a tutor for Lapeer Literacy Center, time at the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge as well as the University of Florida Nature Coast Biological Station. She was proud to have been a founding member of On My Own of Michigan. Mrs. Henkin was loved her entire family, special place in her heart for her grandchildren.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 50 years, Sid, children: Aaron (Jessica) Henkin of Baltimore, MD, Becky Henkin of Troy, grandchildren: Abby and Charlie as well as brother: Richard Johnson of Marquette. She was preceded in death by her afore mentioned parents.
The family has entrusted Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer with cremation. A memorial service will be held at a later, safer date.
Memorial contributions are encouraged to On My Own of Michigan (onmyownofmi.org / 1250 Kirts Blvd., Ste. 300, Troy 48084). Condolences and memories may be left at MuirBrothersLaper.com
