THIRD ANNUAL WOMEN’S MARCH…LARGER THAN THE LAST
January 22, 2019
The Third Annual Women’s March in Cedar Key, beginning at 1 pm at Second Street and State Road 24, brought out some 104 souls, including men, women, and youngsters, to celebrate the occasion. Some rode golf carts; some acatually toted oxygen tanks; others waked the route.
Each partaker had his own reason for participating, but all were united in the belief that women should have and will continue to pursue equal rights, be it for wages or health care. Some wore buttons, such as Lisa Mitchell and her many confederates. Others created their own signs echoing their concerns. One such sign read, “Come on, America, we can do better than this.” Another read, “Next year, we will be better than this.”
Emily of Cedar Key dressed as Rosie the Riveter, complete with 1940s dress and make up. Her sign read, “My arms are tired from holding this sign since the 1960s.”
Leading the parade were Sue Colson and creator of the Cedar Key News Jim Hoy from Gainesville, complete with a red hat knit for him by Dr. Marjory Hoy. Visitors from Maine, Michigan, Canada, and other locations participated in and expressed enjoyment about the event.
Chris from Grand Rapids said, “Great event, unified around the community.” Jeane, also of Michigan, said, “Wonderful!” Chris, from Canada, said, “This is the best of Cedar Key.” Eric, of Fryeburg, Maine, was delighted and thought it meaningful that the event was held locally, instead of and in addition to other larger cities. Hugh, from Cedar Key, said, “What a great crowd!”
Cedar Key’s First Women’s March in 2017 was comprised of Cedar Key’s own Linda Reynolds Seyfert and Sue Colson. The 2018 March gathered over seventy men, women, and children. Click here for a glimpse and an article by Crosby Hunt:
