A sell-out crowd dined and danced the night away at the annual Lions Club Valentine's Day event. Guests enjoyed an outstanding Island Room prepared buffet. Many mentioned that this dinner was chef Peter Stefani's finest. Favorites included mahi with soy-orange glaze and braised beef brisket. Among the most sought-after offerings was Peter's fruit de mer, fresh seafood in a hearty tomato sauce. Lions Club volunteer bakers filled the dessert table with goodies. Choices included chocolate-cherry cake, coconut cake, German chocolate cake and homemade candies. Every sweet tooth was satisfied.
The memorable evening continued as diners moved to the dance floor. Richie Anderson, aka DJ Rich, provided the musical backdrop.
Mixing the perfect blend of tunes, he offered something for everyone. DJ Rich led dancers from romantic slow dances to boogie down hits. From the Glen Miller Orchestra to Glenn Frey's Eagles, he knew exactly what the crowd wanted to hear.
Mid way through the evening, the Cedar Key Lions Club took center stage for a brief presentation. Mike Hodges, Club President, presented Lion Judy Howerton a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship. Named after Lions' founder Melvin Jones, the Fellowship honors humanitarian efforts.
Sadly, Lion Judy is moving away from Cedar Key. Hodges remarked it took four Lions to fill the volunteer void her departure creates. An ever-present volunteer, Lion Judy led the Club's vision and hearing programs. She has helped dozens of applicants receive eye exams and eyeglasses free from the Lions. Judy tested the vision of hundreds of local students as part of the Lions' KidSight Program. She has arranged cataract surgery and secured hearing aids for the less fortunate.
