Informative Florida Shellfish Trail signs are now appearing around Cedar Key. Look for these signs at various sites around town. There are two on Third Street at B Street and one at the end of Dock Street near the Marina, with more to be erected in the upcoming weeks. Look for them on the outer railing at the Marina near the boat tour kiosk and at the outer ramp. Another trail sign is planned for SR24 near the Hathcox clam facility.
Signs are being placed so visitors will be able to walk to areas where the activities occur creating the idea of “Urban Trails.”

On Florida’s Big Bend Shellfish Trail, you will learn about Florida shellfish, aquaculture, and how it helps create a sustainable environment that protects the waters of the Big Bend area. You will find places where you can eat the shellfish produced here and where to buy (retail) Big Bend shellfish.
TheTtrail starts in Jefferson county, runs through Taylor and Dixie county, and ends in Levy County around Inglis and Yankeetown. Working waterfronts of shellfish farmers/fishermen can be viewed from the Big Bend Shellfish Trail creating many photo ops of the beautiful coastal waters and landscapes.
The project is funded by the National Parks Service Maritime Heritage Grants Program, managed by the State Historic Preservation Office. Savanna Barry in concert with Leslie Sturmer and Carol McQueen applied for the grant.
Savanna and Leslie worked with local fishery experts to compile photos and information for the coastal towns in the Big Bend including Steinhatchee, Jena, Horseshoe Beach, Suwannee, Cedar Key, Shell Mound, and Yankeetown. Each town has it’s own unique set of panels (24 in total).
