CEDAR KEY COMMUNITY GARDEN
CELEBRATES FIFTH BIRTHDAY
May 9, 2021
May 9, 2021
They feasted on the Market’s ribs and potato salad and more edibles brought by Gardeners, including everything from Robin Gillies’ Cole slaw to Pat Deverin’s with-and-without-meat beans, to Sandy Lindhout’s brownies.
Community Garden Leader Tom Deverin conducted the Annual Meeting business with alacrity; in seven minutes, the deed was done. He welcomed and updated all on what Gardeners are doing to further their mission.
• The Free Seed Program continues to prosper, amassing the number of dollars needed to pay monthly water bills. The program is made possible by: those Gardeners who meet and fill seed packets four to six times annually; the person continually filling the Free Seed basket; and the person who arranges for the seeds, packets, etc.
• Regular Cedar Key Food Pantry donations continue. Thanks go to those who plant, harvest, and deliver the greens to the Pantry.
• A new relationship with the Williston Area Community Resource Organization is emerging through Beth Mizell and Tom. Click here for more information: https://cedarkeynews.com/index.php/community/6441-ck-community-garden-and-williston-group-connect
• Mandy Offerle reported that the Garden is solvent. As not many dollars have been expended lately because of COVID restrictions, this solvency allowed the Garden’s Annual Meeting ribs and salad to be purchased for the first time. Gardeners aslo formally approved further assisting the Williston group.
• Most importantly was the celebration of the Garden’s fifth year in operation….to wit…Colin read his poem dedicated to the garden:
WORDS ON THE COMMUNITY GARDEN'S
FIFTH ANNUAL ANNIVERSARY PARTY
FIFTH ANNUAL ANNIVERSARY PARTY
Five years have rolled through -
That's what years tend to do.
We've dug lots of trenches,
sifted seeds on hard benches
(that's zinnias for beginners,
marigolds for the old).
That's what years tend to do.
We've dug lots of trenches,
sifted seeds on hard benches
(that's zinnias for beginners,
marigolds for the old).
Our garden's not for the purists -
we permit even tourists,
if they keep to the edges
and don't pick our veggies.
But today is for us to reflect, over riblets and beans,
what in the world this garden-thing means.
we permit even tourists,
if they keep to the edges
and don't pick our veggies.
But today is for us to reflect, over riblets and beans,
what in the world this garden-thing means.
Is our future in tubers?
What about romantic lighting
for when the bugs are not biting?
And then, something aquatic
could be quite dramatic.

could be quite dramatic.
One thing's for sure, if your world's topsy-turvy,
gardening's cheaper than visiting Gainesville for therapy -
though you might get lumbago
if you bend over too far to reach a tomato.
