Sheriff`s Corner

Levy Co. Sheriff`s Office

sheriff

Hello everyone. This week's Sheriff's Corner is answer to a request. I was asked to go over some of the areas of concern regarding senior citizens. I'll start by giving you several stats and tidbits.

First of all, senior citizens represent the most rapidly growing segment in the population. It has been estimated that in the year 2000 35 million people were 65 or older. It's also anticipated that by the year 2030, the number of senior citizens is expected to exceed 64 million here in the U.S.

At this time surveys say that our senior citizen population is the least victimized. I fear that part of the reason for this is the perception by some seniors, that they are the most vulnerable. This because of the fear they sometimes tend to isolate themselves and not live as happily as the might.

So what I'd like to do is start with some general safety tips and then get more specific. We can start at home and work to the outside. First, if you are at home and someone knocks, don't open the door unless you know the visitor. You can use the "through the door viewer" if you have one or install one if you don't. Next, if the person is a salesman, repairman etc. ask for identification or credentials. They can slip them under a door or mail slot. You can verify the information with the company. If the visitor is asking to use a phone or for help, never open the door. Also, you can make the call for them. If the someone at your door is not trusted or will not leave, call us here at the Sheriff's Office or your Police Department immediately.

If you come home and find a burglar is in your home leave if you can. If you can't and the intruder is armed or says they're armed, sit down quietly and obey instructions. DO NOT resist or fight. If possible observed the intruder closely to help with descriptions later after the intruder leaves. Also, call us immediately.

I'll continue next week. I hope everyone has a great week. Please stay safe.
